Introduction / History The Gangota or Gangauta receive their name from the Ganges River on whose banks they live. They believe the goddess Ganga created them. Where are they located?
They are basically found in the Bhagalpur, Kahalgon Munger, Khagaria, Begusarai, Katihar and Purnia districts of the state of Bihar. What are their lives like? Though they speak Hindi, their main language is Angika. They are very ordinary people but also they are very educated people, their main livelihood is dependent on agriculture. Some make their living by fishing and quite a few are wage laborers. Their staple cereals are rice and wheat and they are non-vegetarian. They share water with most surrounding communities, with a few exceptions. |
