Hingora of India |
|
Introduction / History The Hingora or Hingorja believe themselves to be descended from one of the seven sons of a Rajput nobleman from Pakistan. Hingora, as the son was called, converted to Islam and moved to Kachchh in India. Where are they located? They live in the Kachchh district of the state of Gujarat in India. What are their lives like? The Hingora make their living primarily from agriculture.
K. S. Singh describes them in the following manner: "They are non-vegetarian. They practise cross-cousin marriage and follow the norms prescribed by the shariat. The nose-ring (siri) is used as the symbol of marriage by married women. Male equigeniture is the rule of inheritance and the eldest son succeeds to his father's authority. They observe birth pollution for forty days. A name is given to the child within a day of birth followed by circumcision and mundan. Marriage rituals include betrothal (sagai), shou ki rat, majlis and nikah. On the third day after a death, ziarat is performed followed by dasmi on the tenth day, chalisa on the fortieth day, and barmaosi after one year." What are their beliefs? The Hingora are Muslims of the Sunni sect. What are their needs? There is a need for literacy training as many cannot read. Text source: Joshua Project |
