Introduction / History

The Churaute are a small Muslim community living primarily in the hill regions of central Nepal, especially in districts such as Gorkha, Tanahu, and Syangja. They have long been known as the "Hill Muslims" of Nepal and are distinct from the larger Muslim populations of the southern plains. The name Churaute comes from the Nepali word chura, meaning "glass bangles," reflecting their traditional occupation as sellers of bangles and small decorative items.

Historically, the Churaute belonged to a small artisan community within the hill societies of Nepal. Their livelihood centered on traveling through villages selling glass bangles, cosmetics, ornaments, and household items. Because of their occupation and minority religious identity, they were often viewed as socially marginal within the predominantly Hindu hill culture.

The Churaute speak Nepali and are culturally integrated into the wider hill culture of Nepal while maintaining a distinct Muslim identity. Over time, modernization, migration, and economic change have altered some traditional occupations, but many families still preserve strong ties to their community heritage and customs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Churaute families continue to live in hill towns and villages where small trade, labor, farming, transportation work, and local business activities provide income. Some still engage in selling bangles, cosmetics, and household items, though younger generations increasingly pursue other forms of employment.

Daily life in the hill regions of Nepal can be physically demanding because of mountainous terrain, transportation difficulties, and limited economic opportunity. Families often depend heavily on close community relationships and extended family support.

Meals commonly include rice, lentils, vegetables, tea, and locally available grains common throughout Nepalese hill culture. Hospitality toward guests and participation in weddings, festivals, and family gatherings remain important parts of social life.

Because the Churaute are a small minority community, many have historically lived with low social status and limited influence within surrounding society. Access to healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic opportunity may remain difficult in remote hill regions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Churaute are primarily Sunni Muslim. Islamic identity strongly shapes family life, religious practice, and community belonging. Religious observances commonly include prayer, fasting during Ramadan, mosque participation where available, and celebration of Islamic festivals.

At the same time, because the Churaute have lived for generations within a predominantly Hindu culture, aspects of local Hindu customs and folk traditions have influenced parts of their religious life. This syncretistic blending of beliefs can affect spiritual understanding and daily practice.

Religious identity among the Churaute is closely tied to family and community heritage. Many have had little opportunity to hear a clear biblical explanation of salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and social isolation may make access to Christian witness difficult.

What Are Their Needs?

The Churaute need greater access to faithful gospel witness presented clearly in the Nepali language and within their cultural setting. Because they are a small and somewhat isolated Muslim minority in Nepal's hill regions, many have limited exposure to biblical teaching or mature followers of Christ.

There is a need for believers who are willing to build long-term relationships, serve patiently among marginalized communities, and disciple those who may face social pressure for following Jesus Christ. Access to Scripture, Christian teaching materials, and healthy local fellowships is important for lasting spiritual growth.

Practical needs also remain significant, including healthcare access, educational opportunity, vocational training, and economic stability for struggling hill communities. Compassionate Christian ministry can help demonstrate the love of Christ while opening doors for meaningful gospel conversations.

The Churaute would benefit from strong local churches capable of discipling believers, strengthening families, and continuing to share the gospel throughout the hill regions of Nepal.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Churaute people will hear a clear presentation of the gospel and come to understand salvation through Jesus Christ alone.
Pray that God will raise up faithful Christian workers who are willing to serve among the Churaute with humility, wisdom, compassion, and perseverance.
Pray that the Churaute people will be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that sustained prayer, outreach, discipleship, and future gospel engagement will continue among them.
Pray that believers in Nepal will grow strong in biblical faith and boldly share the truth of Christ with Muslim communities throughout the Himalayan region.
