Only a small number of immigrants from India came to live in Denmark. There are many Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka living in that country. The largest South Asian group in Denmark are the Pakistanis. The first Pakistanis came to Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s as migrant workers. The
More than four thousand South Asian refugees came to Denmark from East Africa in the early 1970s.
Later many Sri Lankan Tamils came. When the first of them came seeking asylum in Denmark, they received support from the Danish government. The later ones who came were mainly single young men. Most leaving Sri Lanka for Denmark already had Tamil contacts. The newcomers when arriving become close to these contacts. The Tamils tend to keep to their own communities. The number of Indians living in Denmark is on the rise. They speak Urdu, Punjabi and Danish. Many live in Copenhagen and in Ishoj nearby.
Today most South Asian men work in the product and service sections.
Pakistanis in Denmark continued to grow in numbers. They get involved in politics more than other immigrant groups. The imam of a mosque is Pakistani and there are some Urdu language magazines.
Most Pakistanis living in Denmark are Muslims and there are many Muslim schools.
Denmark is a secularized country. South Asians are unlikely to hear the gospel unless someone makes a point of telling them.
