Introduction / History

The Maghia people live in Odisha. They speak Maithili, Oriya and Hindi and read and write in Oriya and Devanagari.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Maghia own land and are cultivators. They also work in business. They are well educated. A caste council looks after their needs. The Maghia are monogamous and marriages are arranged by discussion and mutual consent. They do not allow for divorce, but the bereaved can marry again. On the death of the father, the sons inherit the property. They eat meat, fish, eggs and rice.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Maghia people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

What Are Their Needs?

The Maghia people need to put all their trust in Jesus Christ, the one who came to provide life to the full for all who call on His name.

Prayer Points

Pray that the council leaders come to Jesus Christ and lead their community into a Christ-ward movement. Pray that gospel materials and the internet lead the Maghia to starting their own Discovery Bible groups. Pray for faithful intercessors and workers who will go to them.
