In Iran the term "Azeri" is used formally for these people; however, informally, Azeris and other Turkic speaking Iranian populations are colloquially referred to as "Tork" (Turk). Despite some friction in the past, Azerbaijanis in Iran came to be "well represented at all levels of political, military, and intellectual hierarchies, as well as the religious hierarchy." The living conditions of Azeris in Iran closely resemble that of Persians.
Ministry Obstacles The region of Iran and Azerbaijan does not offer easy access to Christian workers.
Outreach Ideas The Lord is calling many to His name in Iran. Perhaps Iranian believers will make opportunity to carry the good news of Jesus to the Azeris. Pray the Azeris won't be overlooked by the movement of the Lord's Spirit in Iran.
Pray for the followers of Christ There are a few believers in Christ among the Azeris of Iran at present; pray they will grow both in numbers and in degree of commitment to know and follow Christ. They need prayer support, and they need to fellowship together.
Pray for the entire people group Pray the Azeris of Iran will increasingly be drawn to Isa (Jesus) of the Koran. Pray for growing interest in this Man, for a desire to find out more. Pray this interest will be met with a growing availability of the Gospel of Christ.
Scripture Focus "And the Gospel must first be preached to all the nations." Mark 13:10

Significant effort is made to match photos with people groups. In most cases the photo source has identified the people group. However, in some instances when the exact people group is not identified Joshua Project has made educated attempts at matching. As a result some photos may be representative of the people cluster rather than the specific people group. Mismatches are the fault of Joshua Project, not the photographer. Please contact us if you believe a photo is not matched with the correct people group.
Percentages may be printed as '0.00%' because of space limitations, but some are slightly greater than zero.
The exactness of the above numbers can be misleading. Numbers can vary by several percentage points or more.
People group population figures are now maintained as a percentage of the national population. Click here for details.
Joshua Project does not have specific ministry activity data supporting the "Other Progress Indicators."
Discrepancies may exist between "Other Progress Indicators" because of the varying sources of information.
Joshua Project does not know the exact content of web audio recordings. In general they are Bible reading and teaching.
As on-site realities are understood, barriers of acceptance may be found in many of the larger people groups that will require multiple distinct church planting efforts.
