Introduction / History

The people of Kaibubu (often spelled Kaibobo) are a small, distinct ethnic and linguistic group residing on the southern coast of West Seram Island, in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. They are a small community with a history that ties to the spice trade and a niche cultural identity within the bigger Island of Seram.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kaibubu form a very tight-knit community that relies heavily on subsistence fishing and farming. They are still actively involved in the spice trade. They often participate in observing Sasi, an ancient customary law that forbids the harvesting of certain forest or sea products for a set period, allowing nature to regenerate.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kaibubu people are predominantly Protestant Christians, and the village church is the heart of social life. However, traditional animistic practices still hold them back from putting all their faith in the all-powerful God of the universe.

What Are Their Needs?

Roads to and from their homeland remain unsuitable for large vehicles, which hampers their ability to get their goods to market.

Healthcare access is limited, as emergency and specialized services are dangerously far away. During high-surf seasons, reaching these facilities is sometimes impossible.

As Indonesian national law has struggled to recognize Kaibubu land rights, which makes the land and coasts vulnerable, creating a gray area.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Spirit of God to continually be with them, showing them the way to obey Christ.
Pray that soon Kaibubu disciples will be making more disciples.
Pray for economic stability and justice.
Pray for their needs for health care and education to be met.
