Introduction / History

The Kosare people live in Papua Province, Indonesia, west of the confluence of the Nawa and Idenburg rivers, south of Jayapura. They speak the Kosare language, which belongs to the Papuan language family. Historically, the Kosare were semi-nomadic, living in scattered hamlets deep in the forest. Missionary efforts in the late 20th century encouraged settlement in villages such as Naira and Muara Nawa along the Trans-Irian highway. Traditionally, they survived through hunting wild pigs, fishing, gathering sago, and small-scale gardening. Their culture reflects strong ties to the land and kinship networks.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kosare families live in small villages and hamlets, often near rivers. Houses are simple, built from local wood and thatch. Daily life revolves around subsistence activities: men hunt and fish, while women process sago and tend gardens. Pigs are highly valued for food and social exchange. Families are close-knit, and decisions often involve extended kin. Celebrations include communal feasts, where food such as roasted pig and sago is shared. Their diet consists mainly of sago, taro, sweet potatoes, and fish. Modern conveniences are rare, and travel is mostly on foot through rugged terrain.

What Are Their Beliefs?

About two-thirds of the Kosare people identify with Christianity, specifically Protestant traditions. While many claim to follow Christ, there is a great need for spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith. Some mix traditional practices with Christian forms, and understanding of the gospel may be shallow.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kosare face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is very limited, and preventable diseases are common. Clean water and sanitation are ongoing concerns. Economically, opportunities are scarce, and most families depend on subsistence living. Spiritually, there is a need for clear teaching of God's Word and discipleship so that faith in Christ becomes strong and life-changing. Local believers need encouragement to grow and to join in God's mission to bless all nations.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Kosare to understand and embrace the truth of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Pray that those who profess faith will grow in grace and live out biblical truth in daily life.
Pray for strong local leaders who will teach God's word faithfully, disciple deaply, and lead with humility.
Pray for improved access to healthcare and education so families can thrive physically and spiritually.
Pray that future Kosare believers will become part of the mission force, reaching others with the gospel.
