Introduction / History

The Molof people live in the northern region of Papua Province, Indonesia, near the border with Papua New Guinea. They speak the Molof language, which belongs to the Pauwasi language family and is considered highly endangered.

Historically, the Molof have lived in isolation in dense forest areas, maintaining traditional customs and a subsistence lifestyle. Their communities are small and scattered, and contact with outsiders has been limited, which has preserved their cultural identity but also left them vulnerable to social and economic challenges.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Molof live in small villages surrounded by tropical forests. Their daily life revolves around hunting, fishing, and gathering forest products. Sago palms provide a staple food source, supplemented by root crops, fruits, and wild game. Meals are simple and based on locally available resources, and hospitality is an important cultural value. Families often live in extended households, emphasizing cooperation and respect for elders. Social life includes communal work and celebrations tied to harvest seasons and traditional customs. Traditional dances and songs are performed during community gatherings, reinforcing cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Molof people are primarily Christian, though traditional spiritual beliefs are part of their worldview.

What Are Their Needs?

The Molof face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is extremely limited due to their remote location, and economic opportunities are scarce, leaving most families dependent on subsistence hunting and gathering. Infrastructure such as roads and clean water systems is underdeveloped, making travel and trade difficult.

Prayer Items

Pray that God will send workers to live among the Molof and share the good news of Jesus Christ with humility and perseverance.
Ask the Lord to prepare Molof hearts to receive his word and to break down spiritual barriers that keep them from knowing Christ.
Intercede for improved access to healthcare, education, and clean water so that physical needs are met and communities can flourish.
Pray that Malof Christians will join God's team of intercessors and go-ers to those who lack hope in Christ.
