The Moraid people live in the Bird's Head region of Papua Barat Province, Indonesia, primarily in the coastal and lowland areas near Sorong. They speak the Moraid language, which belongs to the Austronesian language family.
Historically, the Moraid have been an indigenous group with strong ties to the sea and forest resources. Their communities have maintained traditional customs and language despite outside influences. The name "Moraid" reflects their ethnic identity and linguistic heritage.
The Moraid live in small villages surrounded by tropical forests and rivers. Their daily life centers on subsistence farming, hunting, and fishing. Sago palms provide a staple food source, supplemented by root crops, fruits, and fish. Meals are simple, based on locally available resources, and hospitality is an important cultural value.
Families often live in extended households, emphasizing cooperation and respect for elders. Social life includes communal work and celebrations tied to harvest seasons and traditional customs.
The Moraid people identify primarily as Christian, with Protestant traditions being most common. Christianity was introduced through missionary efforts, but traditional animistic beliefs and customs still influence aspects of life. While church attendance and Christian rituals are practiced, there is a need for deeper biblical understanding and spiritual renewal.
The Moraid face both physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is limited due to their remote location, and economic opportunities are scarce, leaving most families dependent on subsistence farming. Infrastructure such as roads and clean water systems is underdeveloped. Spiritually, while Christianity is present, many believers lack strong discipleship and biblical teaching. There is also a need for culturally relevant ministry that strengthens faith while respecting local traditions.
Pray that the gospel will penetrate every Moraid family and community, bringing transformation and hope through Jesus Christ.
Ask God to raise up Moraid workers to take the hope of Christ to Indonesian Muslims.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, and clean water so that physical needs are met and communities can flourish.
