Introduction / History

The Laha people live on Ambon Island in the Maluku Province of Indonesia. Their language, Laha, belongs to the Austronesian family and is spoken alongside Indonesian, which is used for education and trade.

Historically, the Laha were part of the maritime culture of the Maluku Islands, known for spice trade routes that attracted Portuguese and Dutch colonizers. These encounters introduced Christianity, reshaping their cultural and religious landscape. Despite modernization, the Laha maintain strong ties to their language and traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Laha live in coastal villages where fishing and small-scale farming provide their livelihood. Coconut, sago, and root crops are common agricultural products, while fish and seafood are staples in their diet. Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby, sharing responsibilities and resources. Community life includes traditional music and dance during festivals, which often blend indigenous customs with Christian celebrations. Modern schooling is available, but economic opportunities remain limited, and many households depend on subsistence living.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Laha identify as Christian, primarily Protestant, due to missionary influence during colonial times. However, traditional beliefs and practices persist, including respect for ancestral spirits and nature-related rituals. Syncretism is common, where biblical faith coexists with cultural traditions. While churches exist, many believers lack deep discipleship and access to Scripture in their heart language, leaving spiritual growth incomplete.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to healthcare and clean water is limited in rural areas, and economic opportunities are scarce. Education quality varies, and many young people migrate for work, weakening family and community ties.

Spiritually, the Laha need strong biblical teaching and discipleship to grow in faith and become part of the global mission force. Resources for leadership training and Scripture engagement are essential for building vibrant, Christ-centered communities.

Prayer Items

Pray that Laha families will experience improved health and access to clean water.
Ask God to send workers who will teach the gospel clearly and disciple new believers to disciple others.
Pray for the translation and distribution of the Bible and Christian materials so that the Laha can understand and apply God's word.
Intercede for Laha believers to grow in faith and join the global discipleship movement, bringing the light of Christ to Muslim communities.
