Introduction / History

The Dengka people live on the northwest coast of Rote Island in Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara Timur Province. Their homeland stretches from Ba'a town westward to Tasilo Bay. Historically, Rote Island has been influenced by maritime trade and contact with neighboring islands, yet the Dengka have preserved their distinct language and cultural identity. Their traditions reflect a blend of local customs and outside influences, shaped by centuries of interaction with traders and colonial powers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Dengka people primarily engage in farming, fishing, and raising livestock. Corn, rice, and root crops are common staples, while coastal communities depend heavily on fishing. Villages are typically small, with homes built from local materials such as wood and thatch. Community life is close-knit, and extended families often live near one another. While some modern amenities have reached Rote Island, access to healthcare and education remains limited in rural areas. Seasonal droughts and economic challenges make daily life difficult for many families.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Dengka people identify as Christian, with the majority affiliated with mainline denominations. Unfortunately, many lack a clear understanding of biblical faith, and traditional customs still influence spiritual practices. There is a significant need for discipleship and teaching that emphasizes a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and obedience to God's word.

What Are Their Needs?

The Dengka face both physical and spiritual needs. Limited infrastructure means that clean water, healthcare, and educational opportunities are often inadequate. Economic opportunities are scarce, leaving families dependent on subsistence farming and fishing. Spiritually, while Christianity is present, there is a need for strong biblical teaching, leadership development, and resources that encourage genuine faith and counter syncretism.

Prayer Items

Pray for mature, Bible-believing leaders to rise up among the Dengka people.
Ask God to strengthen existing churches and bring spiritual renewal.
Pray for improved access to education and healthcare in rural communities.
Intercede for discipleship resources that clearly communicate God's Word.
Pray for hearts to be open to the gospel and for a hunger for truth among the Dengka.
