The Uwet Bakpinka, also known simply as Bakpinka or Uwet, are an ethnic group living in southeastern Nigeria. Their communities are found in the Cross River region, where they have maintained a distinct identity over generations. The primary language spoken by the Uwet Bakpinka is Iyongiyong, which belongs to the Upper Cross River language group. Their history is closely tied to the forests and rivers of their homeland, and their traditions reflect a deep connection to their land and ancestors.
The Uwet Bakpinka people live in rural villages where agriculture is the main occupation. Men and women work together in the fields, cultivating crops such as yams, cassava, maize, and vegetables. Farming is often done with simple tools, and families may also keep small livestock or fish in local streams. Meals are prepared from locally grown produce, with yams and cassava forming the staple diet. Family life is central, with extended families living in close-knit compounds and sharing daily responsibilities. Children help with chores and learn traditional skills from their elders. Community celebrations are important, especially during harvest time and major life events such as weddings and naming ceremonies. Music, dance, and storytelling are woven into these gatherings, strengthening social bonds and passing down cultural values.
Christianity is the primary faith among the Uwet Bakpinka, and churches play a significant role in community life. Many families attend church services and participate in Christian festivals and holidays. The message of Jesus Christ has brought hope and transformation to many, and believers seek to live out their faith in daily life. While Christianity is predominant, some traditional beliefs and customs may still be observed, especially during cultural ceremonies. There are also individuals who follow other religious paths, but the influence of the gospel is strong in most communities.
Access to quality education and healthcare remains a challenge for many Uwet Bakpinka families. Clean water and improved infrastructure would greatly benefit their villages. As the community adapts to modernization, there is a need to preserve their language and cultural identity. Continued discipleship and outreach are important so that every Uwet Bakpinka person can hear and understand the message of Jesus Christ and become part of the global body of believers.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, and clean water in Uwet Bakpinka communities.
Ask God to strengthen the faith of Uwet Bakpinka believers and encourage spiritual growth.
Pray that Uwet Bakpinka churches will send workers to share the gospel with those who have not heard.
Pray for the preservation of the Iyongiyong language and cultural identity as the community develops.
