Introduction / History

The Bantik are an ethnic group living primarily in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. They are recognized for their distinct language, Bantik, which belongs to the Austronesian language family. The Bantic have a long history in the region, with roots that connect them to other coastal and highland peoples of Sulawesi. Over generations, they have maintained their cultural identity through oral traditions, traditional music, and community customs, even as they have experienced influences from neighboring groups and national development.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bantik people mainly live in rural villages and small towns. Most families rely on agriculture, growing rice, corn, and vegetables, while some also fish or raise livestock such as chickens and pigs. The Bantik diet is based on rice, fish, vegetables, and coconut, with spicy condiments adding flavor to their meals. Both men and women contribute to farming and household tasks, and extended families often live close together, providing support and sharing resources. Community life is important, with celebrations marking events such as harvests, weddings, and religious holidays. These gatherings often include traditional music, dance, and shared meals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bantik people are primarily Christian, with most identifying as Protestant. Christian beliefs and practices shape much of their community life, including regular church attendance, prayer, and the celebration of Christian holidays. In some areas, traditional beliefs and customs are blended with Christian practices, especially in ceremonies related to agriculture and family life. While the gospel is present among the Bantik, there are still those who hold to traditional beliefs, and the need for deeper discipleship remains.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Bantik communities face challenges related to limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Children may have only basic schooling, and families often struggle with poverty and health concerns. While the gospel is known among the Bantik, there is a need for ongoing discipleship and spiritual growth, so that believers can mature in their faith and become part of the global mission force. The Bantik also need encouragement and resources to address both their physical and spiritual challenges, trusting in the mercy and provision of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Bantik people would experience improved access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Ask God to strengthen the faith of Bantik believers and raise up mature disciples who can share the hope of Christ with others.
Pray that the Bantik church would be equipped to address both physical and spiritual needs in their communities, reflecting the love and mercy of Jesus.
Ask the Lord to send workers who can encourage and train the Bantik to participate in the global body of Christ and the worldwide mission.
