Introduction / History

The Bolongan people live in North Kalimantan, Indonesia, mainly in Bulungan Regency along the lower Kayan River near Tanjung Selor. They speak the Bulungan language, also known as Bolongan, which belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Malayo-Polynesian group. Historically, this language served as the court language of the Bulungan Sultanate, reflecting a rich heritage of local governance and cultural identity. Over time, contact with other ethnic groups and Islamic traders shaped their traditions and beliefs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bolongan people live in small towns and rural villages along rivers, where fishing and farming are central to daily life. Rice cultivation, along with growing vegetables and fruits, provides food for families. Houses are typically built from wood and raised on stilts to protect against flooding. Community ties are strong, and traditional customs still influence social life, even as modern education and technology slowly reach the area. Access to healthcare and economic opportunities remains limited, and many families depend on local resources for survival.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Bolongan people identify as Christians, but their traditional religious beliefs seep into the church.

There is also Islamic influence in their communities.

What Are Their Needs?

Healthcare and education are significant challenges for the Bolongan people. Remote locations make it difficult to access medical services and schools, and economic opportunities are scarce. Infrastructure improvements, such as better roads and clean water systems, would greatly enhance living conditions.

Prayer Points

Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and clean water in Bolongan communities.
Ask God to raise up workers who can share the gospel in the Bolongan language and live out Christ's love among them.
Pray for hearts to be open to the message of salvation and for families to experience transformation through Jesus.
Pray that soon Bolongan Christians will become Christ's ambassadors to Muslims.
