Vanua Levu, Central in Fiji

Introduction / History

The Central Vanua Levu are an indigenous iTaukei Fijian people living across eastern islands of Fiji. They speak a dialect of Fijian and share in the wider Melanesian-Polynesian heritage. Traditional society was clan-based with strong chiefly systems. In the 19th century, Christian missionaries brought major social change as chiefs converted and influenced their people.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is village-centered, with subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Extended families live closely and emphasize respect, sharing, and communal decision-making. Celebrations include church gatherings, weddings, and kava ceremonies. Diets feature root crops, fish, coconut, and tropical fruits.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Christian, influenced strongly by Methodist and other churches, though biblical understanding and discipleship vary. Before Christianity, animistic beliefs and ancestral spirits shaped life, and some cultural elements persist.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater depth of biblical teaching would strengthen believers beyond nominal faith. Leadership training could equip local churches to disciple effectively. Economic opportunities and education would help communities thrive while preserving cultural identity.
