The Chachi are an indigenous people living in the tropical rainforest of northwestern Ecuador, primarily in the province of Esmeraldas along the Cayapas, Canandé, and Muisne rivers.
They are one of the few remaining indigenous groups of the coastal lowlands and speak their own language, Chachi, which belongs to the Barbacoan language family. According to their oral traditions, the Chachi originally came from the Andean highlands and migrated to the coastal region after the Spanish conquest. Over time, they settled in riverine rainforest areas that remain their home today. Despite centuries of outside influence, the Chachi have maintained a distinct identity rooted in their language, environment, and communal way of life.
The Chachi live in small, scattered communities along rivers in the rainforest. These rivers serve as the center of daily life, providing transportation, food, and connection between communities.
Their homes are typically built on stilts with thatched roofs, adapted to the humid environment and seasonal flooding. Travel is often done by canoe, which is an essential part of their daily life.
The Chachi depend largely on subsistence activities. They farm crops such as plantains and cassava, fish in nearby rivers, and hunt animals in the surrounding forest. These activities are supported by deep knowledge of the rainforest and its resources.
Community life is cooperative, with families working together and sharing responsibilities. Many also produce crafts, especially woven baskets and other goods, which may be sold in nearby towns.
Their lifestyle reflects a close relationship with the natural environment, and many communities are actively involved in caring for and conserving the rainforest.
The Chachi traditionally held beliefs that emphasized the spiritual importance of nature and the presence of unseen forces in the world around them.
Since colonization, many Chachi have been influenced by Roman Catholicism, and today Christianity is common among them. However, traditional ideas often continue alongside Christian practices, resulting in a blended or syncretistic belief system.
In some communities, spiritual leaders and traditional practices still play a role, reflecting an ongoing connection to their ancestral worldview.
The Chachi face significant challenges related to their environment and way of life. Their rainforest territory is under pressure from logging, mining, and other forms of development that threaten their land and natural resources.
Many communities also lack adequate access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure, contributing to ongoing economic hardship.
Cultural preservation is another concern. Although their language and traditions remain important, they are under pressure from outside influences and changing conditions, especially among younger generations.
Spiritually, many identify as Christian, but there is a need for deeper understanding of biblical teaching and for discipleship that connects with their cultural context and daily life.
Pray for the protection of Chachi lands and natural resources from outside exploitation.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and basic services in their communities.
Pray for a deeper understanding of the gospel that connects clearly with their worldview.
Pray for local believers to grow in faith and to make disciples who will make more disciples.
