They are one of six Tzeltal groups, divided by location, but all live in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Chiapas is on the border with Guatemala.
There is so much poverty in the Chamula Tzeltal homeland that many are leaving to earn a living elsewhere. Their hometown is half indigenous and half Mestizo.
The Chamula Tzeltal are Christianized, but less than two percent Evangelical. Traditionally they have been Roman Catholic, but the Jehovah s Witnesses and Mormons are making inroads into their communities. There is a complete Bible in their language, but the Book of Mormon is being translated for them as well.
The Chamula Tzeltal people need to understand and embrace a Christ-centered theology. They need a higher literacy rate both in Spanish and their Tzotzil language.
Pray for the Chamula Tzeltal to become literate in their own language, and willing to study the Bible in it.
Pray for their spiritual confusion to be replaced by Christ-centered lives.
Pray for Chamula Tzeltal disciples to make more disciples who will make even more disciples.
