Introduction / History

Dusun means "people of the orchards." It was the name given to this people group by Malays. Most of the Witu Dusun live in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan province, on the island of Borneo. The Witu Dusun have their own language, a language closely related to Malagasy, spoken in Madagascar. The Dusun refer to themselves as "tulun tindal" – landsmen. British explorers in the late 1800s described the Dusun as a "wild tribe" that cultivated the land. A British officer who observed the Witu Dusun in the 1920s speculated that they may have had a Burmese origin because of their communal houses and agricultural methods.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They have long had a reputation for being peaceful, hospitable, and having a strong work ethic. They continue to engage in farming, predominantly raising and harvesting rice.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Historically, the Witu Dusun practiced animism, fearing and appeasing the spirits of nature and the mountains. According to their oral tradition, a male and a female creator are responsible for the world. These gods gave birth to a daughter named Huminodun. The Witu Dusun continue to celebrate Huminodun each year with a harvest festival.

What Are Their Needs?

While nearly half the Witu Dusun are "Christian," the vast majority of those are Catholic. Many also continue to practice animism. They need a clear presentation of the good news of salvation and dedicated workers willing to invest themselves in making disciples who will follow Jesus Christ with all their hearts.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Witu Dusun to be open to God's word and the truth of the gospel message.
Pray for believers among the Witu Dusun to be bold in sharing their faith, not only with their own people, but also with gospel starved communities.
