Saint Lucia was once a British colony. When the abolished the slave trade in 1838, the British needed a new source of cheap labor. They found it by hiring indentured workers from India, one of their other colonies. These indentured workers came to Saint Lucia from 1959-93.

May 6, 2013 was the day people of East Indian descent celebrated Indian Arrival Day. They hope the government of Saint Lucia will make this an official yearly event. Each Indians in other Caribbean nations would like Indian Arrival Day to be celebrated in their countries.
