Introduction / History

The Koke are an Indigenous people of Chad whose identity is tied to their traditional homeland within the country's central region. They belong to the Adamawa people cluster and are part of the broader Sub?Saharan cultural sphere.

Their traditional language, Koke, continues to be their primary means of communication and serves as a key element of cultural continuity. Historically, the Koke have maintained local customs, oral history, and patterns of communal life learned through generations. With limited outside influence, many of their cultural structures remain rooted in longstanding traditions tied closely to land, ancestry, and community.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Koke communities rely on subsistence farming, small-scale herding, and seasonal labor. Families often work together in fields, growing staple crops suitable for dry-region agriculture. Daily routines revolve around tending livestock, collecting water, managing household responsibilities, and preparing meals made from grains, local vegetables, and occasionally meat when available.

Family life is organized around extended kinship structures where cooperation and shared labor are essential for survival. Elders serve as guardians of cultural knowledge, teaching younger generations about proper conduct, local customs, and the stories that shape their identity. Social interactions center on the village, where community ties remain strong.

Cultural practices include celebrations tied to life transitions, seasonal rhythms, and communal gatherings. Music, storytelling, and traditional expressions often form part of these events. Although modernization has reached some parts of the region, many Koke continue to preserve older practices that reinforce belonging and identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religious orientation among the Koke is a set of ethnic religious beliefs, which include respect for ancestral spirits, sacred places, and spiritual forces associated with the natural world. These beliefs are deeply woven into daily life and cultural expression, influencing understandings of illness, protection, blessing, and misfortune.

While some Christian influence exists in the region, many Koke still look to traditional spiritual intermediaries for guidance. It is important for the Koke to come to place their full trust in the God of the Bible rather than relying on local spirits or ritual specialists. Christian teaching offers hope, forgiveness, and spiritual freedom, and it provides a path toward transformation for individuals, families, and the community.

What Are Their Needs?

Reliable access to health care remains a significant challenge for the Koke. Many families live far from medical facilities, and preventable illnesses can become serious when care is delayed. Expanded health services, vaccinations, maternal care, and training for local health workers would greatly benefit the community.

Educational opportunities are also limited. Many children do not have consistent access to schools, teachers, or learning materials. Strengthening local education—including opportunities to learn in both Koke and regional languages—would support literacy, improve future employment options, and help younger generations navigate a changing world.

Spiritually, there is a need for discipleship, Bible teaching, and access to Scripture in forms the Koke can readily understand. Currently, ministry resources are extremely limited, with no Jesus Film or known audio recordings in Koke. Additional Christian resources could help support believers who desire to grow in their faith despite a strong background in ethnic traditionalism.
