The Laube Russell Islander people live in the Russell Islands of the Central Province of the Solomon Islands, a volcanic island group that includes Pavuvu, Mbanika, and several smaller islets. Their homeland lies northwest of Guadalcanal and is partly covered with coconut plantations, with Yandina serving as the main service center. The Laube speak Lavukaleve, a Central Solomons language historically rooted in the region and regarded as one of the pre-Austronesian languages of the Solomon Islands. The Lavukal people, among whom the Laube are identified, have long inhabited the Russell Islands and maintain a strong linguistic and cultural connection to their ancestral lands. Their history includes displacement during the development of plantations under British influence, which moved some Lavukaleve-speaking communities from larger islands to smaller ones. During World War II, the islands were occupied by American forces, and remnants of military installations remain part of the local landscape.
Daily life for Laube Russell Islanders reflects a blend of village-based community rhythms and participation in the wider economy of the Central Province. Many households engage in small-scale agriculture, tending coconut palms, home gardens, and other crops suited to the humid island climate. Copra production remains part of the local economic structure, supported by facilities at Yandina. Fishing provides a steady food source, and families often combine garden produce with marine resources for their meals. Yandina hosts basic services such as a store, post office, and airport, enabling residents to purchase supplies, seek schooling, and stay connected with other islands. Social life is closely tied to extended families and clan relationships, and gatherings often feature traditional singing and storytelling that preserve ancestral memory. Community celebrations may coincide with church calendars or local events, forming natural points of fellowship within village life. Solomon Islands Pijin is widely spoken in addition to Lavukaleve, especially in mixed communities or workplaces. Villages in the Russell Islands maintain a rural character, with most people relying on cooperative work, customary land ties, and shared duties that reinforce community cohesion.
Christianity is the primary religious identity among the Laube Russell Islanders. Most community practices and seasonal celebrations reflect the rhythms of the Christian year, and church life provides structure for teaching, worship, and community participation. Some traditional beliefs related to ancestral identity and land may continue to shape cultural understanding, but Christian faith forms the central framework of spiritual life.
Access to improved educational and economic opportunities would strengthen local families and provide pathways for young people seeking work or training beyond their home islands. Better transportation and communication links would reduce isolation and make essential services more dependable. Continued development of health services is important in addressing common medical concerns and supporting family well-being. A vibrant Christian community benefits from discipleship resources that nurture biblical understanding and encourage believers to participate in God's mission, both within the Russell Islands and beyond.
Pray for improved health care, transportation, and communication services that support daily life across the islands.
Ask the Lord to strengthen local families as they balance traditional community life with the pressures of modern economic change.
Pray that followers of Jesus among the Laube Russell Islanders grow in spiritual maturity and become a faithful part of the global discipleship force.
Lift up efforts to provide Scripture resources and teaching in Lavukaleve so that God's Word may take deeper root in every household.
