"Pray with me for a miracle! I need God to give me another boy in the place of the one that died." Luchiya, third wife of six, is without status unless she has a son. Thirty percent of the children under age five die in her village. Malaria, typhoid, worms and eye diseases are taking their toll. Despite these challenges, Luchiya is beaming today! She is learning Bible Stories from a solar device. She's a quick learner and has an eager audience. There are 66 Chronological Bible Stories on her device. Nearby, Maria has just cut off the totem from her wrist. She hoped it would cure her infertility. Today she has decided to put her trust in God.
The Toposa, known as fierce warriors and cattle stealers, are a tribe of roughly 300,000. They were armed with AK47's during the civil war by armies from the North and the South. Today these AK47's are used to steal cattle. The Toposa are resistant to the gospel, preferring to depend on spirit doctors to cure diseases and infertility. Most Toposa shun schools and train their children to tend cattle/goats and to work in the gardens. Wives are unable to halt sexual practices of their husbands which lead to rampant AIDS and venereal disease. Alcoholism undermines family prosperity. Men value large herds of cattle and multiple wives. Each new wife requires a dowry to be paid. The "dowry" is the primary motivation for the theft of cattle from neighboring tribes.
Pray that God would send believers from neighboring tribes that speak similar languages to share God's story and start new churches.
Pray for Godly leaders who are large animal veterinarians, community health educators, and farmers to come and help the Toposa in ways that are meaningful to them.
Pray the Toposa will stop stealing cattle and choose to be at peace with their neighbors.
