Introduction / History

Venezuelans are citizens of Venezuela. In 1821, Venezuela gained its independence from Spain along with Colombia and Ecuador, but they broke into three countries in 1830. Venezuela was a prosperous country until an over-reliance on petroleum, coupled with disastrous government economic policies, drove the nation into poverty and eventually into a humanitarian crisis. Roughly one in four Venezuelans are now living in other countries. Today Venezuelans are in 10 countries, most of which are in Europe and North America. One of these countries is Denmark.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Primarily because of the need to flee the country in haste, only wealthier Venezuelans left with passports and other essential documents. Those who fled to other countries might be from poor, middle-class, or wealthy backgrounds. They are developing networks that help them build social networks and pressure the Venezuelan government to change its policies. Those who find work in Denmark send money to their families in Venezuela.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Wherever they live, most Venezuelans are Roman Catholic, with an Evangelical minority. They can be used by God as his special ambassadors.

What Are Their Needs?

Many have refugee status, but they need to find jobs that will sustain their families. It is not helpful for Venezuelans to have to live outside their country to survive. They need honest and capable government leaders who will rebuild what has been torn down.

Prayer Points

Pray for God s mercy for Venezuelans and for a stable and capable government.
Pray for the Lord to use Venezuelan Christians to spread the fame of Jesus Christ in Denmark.
Pray for their suffering to result in the willingness to look to Jesus Christ and the Bible for answers.
