The Weli in Papua New Guinea are an indigenous people of the southern and central portion of the country, with communities traditionally located in parts of Central Province and Morobe Province near river headwaters and inland areas. Their heritage has been shaped by long settlement in this tropical environment, with identity maintained through language, family ties, and community life passed down across generations. Oral history and community memory preserve much of their understanding of origin and place.
Weli communities are largely rural and closely tied to the landscape around them. Daily life centers on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and local trade, with families working together to tend gardens, raise food, and support one another. Extended family and village cooperation play a strong role in managing work, community events, and social responsibilities.
People in these areas often speak multiple languages: their mother tongue, known locally as Amam or Weri, alongside Tok Pisin — a widely used lingua franca in Papua New Guinea. English may also be known through schooling and external contact. Language serves both functional daily needs and a connection to cultural identity and heritage.
The Weli are identified primarily with Christianity, which influences much of their social values and community life. Christian teachings and practices are present among many families and congregations, shaping moral understanding and fellowship. At the same time, some people may also retain elements of traditional cultural perspectives about the unseen world, expressed in local terms rather than formalized worldviews. The heart of Christian belief for those who follow Christ is the transforming hope found in Jesus, which remains central to the community's spiritual identity.
Continued spiritual growth and discipleship are important for the Weli people. While there is significant Christian identification, opportunities for deeper engagement with Scripture that resonates in both their language and cultural context will strengthen personal and community faith.
Scripture in the Amam/Weri language has portions of the Bible and the New Testament available, which supports engagement with God's Word, but continued emphasis on Bible study, teaching resources, and application can help believers grow in understanding and faithfulness. Leaders equipped with biblical training and pastoral skill are needed to guide and nurture mature Christian communities. Prayer and support for families, youth, and church outreach will help embed Christ?centered living more fully across daily life.
Pray that believers among the Weli in Papua New Guinea will grow in their love for and understanding of scripture, and that this knowledge will transform their daily lives.
Pray for continued access to Scripture in the Amam/Weri language and for meaningful engagement with God's word that honors both language and culture.
Pray for faithful, well?equipped leaders who will shepherd with wisdom, humility, and compassion.
Pray that families will be strengthened and encouraged in Christ?centered living.
Pray that the Weli church will have a vision to share the hope of Jesus Christ with neighbors and surrounding peoples.
