Yabiyufa in Papua New Guinea

Introduction / History

The Yabiyufa are an indigenous people of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, living south of Goroka. They belong to the New Guinea cultural cluster and speak Yaweyuha. Their communities have long been shaped by highland traditions, later influenced by Christian missions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life centers on subsistence gardening, with families raising root crops and tending small plots. Extended families live closely, sharing work and resources. Social life includes communal gatherings and seasonal celebrations, often marked by feasting. Diets typically include garden produce such as sweet potatoes, greens, and occasional meat from hunting.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify with Christianity, especially Protestant traditions, yet elements of traditional beliefs remain. Earlier animistic ideas about spirits and the unseen world still influence daily thinking, sometimes blending with Christian practice.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to clear biblical teaching in their heart language would strengthen understanding and reduce syncretism. Deeper discipleship is necessary, so believers mature and become witnesses within their own communities. Improved access to Christian resources and training would help local leaders guide the church effectively.
