Introduction / History

The Bind community is the most numerous in Bihar and West Bengal in eastern India, but they also live in Nepal and Bangladesh.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Marriages among the Bind people involve elaborate marriage rituals performed by Hindu holy men. After the wedding, the bride moves in with her new husband's family. From then on she will wear conch shell bangles and put vermilion in the part of her hair to show that she is a married woman. Women get married young and spend the rest of their lives caring for children, cooking and making baskets from reeds. Very few Bind women get an education or learn to read.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They practice the Hindu religion and worship family deities as well as traditional Hindu gods. They are noted for worshipping the Hindu god, Shiva.

What Are Their Needs?

They have no idea that Jesus loves them and has provided for all their spiritual needs.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to reach the hearts and minds of the Bind people. May they find their dignity and self-worth in Jesus Christ, and disciple others to do the same. Ask God to prepare their hearts even now for the day when the Bind people hear the gospel.
