According to one account, the word Shaikh is a general term of courtesy equivalent to the English term of sir. According to another account, the name is applied to people of pure Arab descent; but it has also been adopted by converts from Hindu communities.
Shaikhs have large communities in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. A small number have migrated to other parts of the world such as New Zealand.
Among South Asian Muslims, Shaikhs have great prestige as being knowledgeable about Islam. They are likely to be the imams and other mosque leaders.
The majority belong to the Sunni sect of Islam.
Shaikhs need spiritual discernment and humility to see that Jesus offers answers to life's many problems.
Pray for spiritual hunger among the Shaikhs in New Zealand.
Pray that the Lord will send dreams and visions to the Shaikhs of New Zealand that will give them the willingness to teach Christ at the mosques.
Pray that Shaikhs will soon disciple thousands of Muslims in the life-transforming ways of Jesus Christ.
