Introduction / History

The Kistane people live in the highlands of Ethiopia, south of Addis Ababa the nation's capital.

The Kistane people are largely devoted Orthodox Christians, as their name (meaning "the Christians") implies. There are also some Muslims within this tribe. While there are many Orthodox churches in the Kistane area, the services are always held in the national language (Amharic). Very few Kistane people can read or write in their own language. This is particularly unfortunate for the majority of Kistane women who do not tend to learn Amharic well. The Kistane do not have scripture in their own language.
