Introduction / History

Qatari Sign language came into being officially early this century. The first Deaf school in Qatar came four years later.

There is a lack of education for Deaf people after primary school in Qatar. At present there are no laws against discrimination for Deaf people here. It is difficult to find Deaf people in Qatar who are an example to follow. Lip reading needs to become more advanced.

In Qatar there are only a few Sign Language interpreters who do not get paid much. There is a lack of Sign Language education.

The Qatar Cultural and Social Centre for the Deaf has come into being. It is assisted financially by the government. It is really trying to help with making improvements for the Deaf in this country.
