Introduction / History

The Pitaguari or Pitaguary of Brazil have had connections with the outside world for about four hundred years when the Portuguese came to them. The Dutch then arrived later and the Pitaguari joined forces with them against the Portuguese. In the seventeenth century they were contacted by the Jesuits. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Pitaguari registered lands which were brought together and is now the Pitaguari Indigenous Land.

The name Pitaguari is related to high mountainous regions. Plants for medicines and several raw materials come from here. They live in Maracanau, Ceara and belong to the Tupi Guarani language peoples.

The finances of the Pitaguari come from the growing of crops such as corn and beans amongst other things like the rasing of certain animals. Some work as wage earners and their young people study. They also make hats and baskets.

Marriage with those who are not in their group does not happen very often. The Pitaguari are going to new places where they can plant crops. In June they have a big festival.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Brazilian government will ease their restrictions on evangelizing small people groups in their country.
Pray that Brazilian Christians will give the Pitaguari the gospel message and lead them to Jesus Christ.
