Introduction / History

Most Chinese came to live in Kenya at the end of the last century and early this century. Most of them live in Nairobi near the Chinese embassy. Chinese also live in the second largest Kenyan city of Mombasa. They speak Mandarin Chinese.

What Are Their Lives Like?

In Kenya there is a Chinese community school. The Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts Chinese radio and television. There are many Chinese restaurants in Nairobi. Chinese have import/export businesses in Kenya. Some have clothing factories. There are difficulties between Chinese and Kenyan workers. While there is respect for Chinese engineers building roads and buildings, in the remote regions of Kenya Chinese engineers are in danger of being attacked by local Kenyans.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Chinese have been influenced by Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism throughout their long history. They also have their own practices, which often involve appeasing the spirits of their ancestors. Since the advent of communism in 1949, religion has been weakened, and some are non-religious.

What Are Their Needs?

The Chinese people in Kenya need both physical and spiritual protection. They look to the spirit world to protect them, but they need Almighty God instead.

Prayer Points

Pray for the safety of the Chinese workers. Pray that Kenyan Christians will lead the Chinese to salvation in Christ alone. Pray for the Lord to show himself powerful and loving to these Chinese people.
