Introduction / History

In the first fifty years of the twentieth century, only a few Indian students came to Ireland to earn their degrees before returning to South Asia. In the late 1980s and early 1990s some South Asians remained in Ireland as doctors and medical personnel.

Before 1990 most Indians came to live in Ireland from northern India, especially from Gujarat and Punjab. From 1990 to 2007, the number of Indian people grew in Ireland as the Irish economy improved and more foreign workers were allowed in. From 2008 onwards fewer Indians came to Ireland as the Irish economy worsened leading to tightened immigration laws. Today, children of South Asian origin have been born in Ireland or came to live there when they were very young.

South Asians live in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Athlone, and Limerick. They speak Hindi, Urdu, English, and other languages.

South Asian doctors come to Ireland to settle. South Asians work in the clothing industry, have small businesses or work in the computer industry. Many own Indian restaurants. The less fortunate work in construction. Students who studied in Ireland settled in that country after they finished their degrees.
