Introduction / History

The Tajpuriya are one of the indigenous tribes of Nepal who have been living in the plains of the Terai region since before Nepal had a name. If they aren't the first settlers in Nepal, they are among the first. We do not know when they began to settle in the area. They originated in what is now Nepal's Morang and Jhapa districts.
Today they live mainly in the eastern districts of Jhapa and Morang in Nepal. They also live in the Indian regions and states of Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Tezpur, and Mazuring. The mother tongue of the Tajpuriya caste is Tajpuri.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tajpuriyas have their own culture, language, dress, and customs. Their traditional attire is the petani worn by women and the dhoti, kurta and handkerchief worn by men.
They have established the Tajpuriya Social Welfare Council to protect and promote their language, culture and rights.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are a nature-worshiping community. The Tajpuriya people are dedicated to their village deities. The daughters in their families perform a special puja, or worship service. Tajpuriya perform these same pujas at weddings and funerals. All of their settlements include a place to worship the village deity. They also worship Shiva, an important Hindu god. They always celebrate Hindu festivals.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tajpuriya people need greater spiritual and economic prosperity. They need to look to Jesus Christ, the one who offers life to the full. He can provide them with all their needs according to his riches and glory.
