Introduction / History
The Ganzas have their own language also named Ganza. They are a small tribe living mainly in Sudan, though some spill over the border into Ethiopia.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Ganzas have an interesting custom where two brothers will marry sisters from the next village. Only a few wealthy individuals can marry more than one wife. In most cases, there is no bride price or bride service. Men work on the farms and tend livestock, and women collect honey from hives they find. They trade goods with neighboring villages.
Each village has a headman who inherits his position and has limited authority. He is called the Father of the Land. He owns symbolic insignias: strings of beads, spears, and village drums. Farmland is held in common by people of an entire village.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Most Ganzas adhere to an ethnic religion that has a supreme creator god, but they also worship the spirits of their dead ancestors. They also take part in divination and rain-making ceremonies. Each village has a spiritual expert. There is a small Christian minority among them.
