Dimbong in Cameroon

Introduction / History

The Dimbong people live in Cameroon, primarily in two small villages northwest of the town of Bafia in the Centre Region of the country. Historically, they are part of the larger Bantu ethnolinguistic grouping within Sub?Saharan Africa, and they have maintained a distinct identity over many generations. Although the Dimbong language has been documented by linguists as nearly extinct due to language shift, many community members still identify with their traditional name and heritage.

The Dimbong speak a Bantu language known as Dimbong (also called Kaalong or Kalong), which belongs to the Niger?Congo language family, although the number of fluent speakers has declined significantly as many have shifted to speaking neighboring languages such as Bafia. The Dimbong language remains unwritten and is considered vulnerable, reflecting its marginalization in education and media.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for the Dimbong people centers on village living in rural areas where daily routines are shaped by subsistence activities and local social structures. Agricultural work, family obligations, and community cooperation define much of their everyday life, and interaction with nearby towns allows for limited access to goods and services. Because of their small population and remote location, many Dimbong households live without extensive infrastructure or formal social services.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority of the Dimbong people identify with Christianity, with a significant portion having been influenced by Roman Catholic traditions due to missionary activity, while others in the community may still practice or hold beliefs associated with traditional African religions. Despite nominal Christian affiliation, biblical presence is not as strong as it needs to be. Many put their faith in an institution rather than in the blood of Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Dimbong people urgently require oral and audio Scripture resources because their language is nearly extinct and unwritten, making traditional print materials largely inaccessible. The absence of a biblically-minded church presence means that emerging believers need mentorship and guidance to grow in faith and form supportive Christian communities. Additionally, the remote locations of their villages contact external ministry networks difficult, so strategies that can reach isolated households and provide culturally appropriate discipleship are essential.

Pray that God would open doors for culturally appropriate gospel outreach among the Dimbong and that the few believers in the community would grow in faith and be bold in sharing hope with others, including those from other ethnic groups.
Ask for God to provide and empower workers who can develop language and discipleship resources that meet the needs of the Dimbong people.
Pray for unity and transformation within families and villages as spiritual understanding deepens and as Christ?like love becomes evident in everyday interactions.
