The Bhat Brahmins living in Bangladesh are a very small minority of the population. Most live in the southern portion of the country, near the Bay of Bengal where they are involved in agriculture.
Today they represent a highly educated segment of Bangladesh’s population. Many are leaders in the fields of computer science, engineering, entertainment, and politics. However, as Hindus in a Muslim majority country, they do not have the same status they do in neighboring India or Nepal.
The Bhat Brahmins practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. Brahmins like the Bhat community tend to be philosophical in their approach to the spiritual realm. They are usually vegetarians. Almost all Hindus participate in yearly celebrations like Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama’s birthday.
The greatest need facing the Bhat Brahmins is for a spiritual awakening. There are no known followers of Christ among them.
Pray for this people group to hear the gospel message in their heart language and respond with a movement to Christ this decade. Pray for the Lord to open their spiritual eyes and soften their hearts to the good news. Pray for the right ambassadors of Christ to go to the Bhat Brahmins in Bangladesh and India.
