Sikule in Indonesia

Simeulue Island is renowned for its expansive, peaceful beaches and towering waves, which have become a haven for surfers. The influx of surfers gives local people opportunities for many supporting businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, and souvenir sales. One of the people who live there is the Sikule. They are noted for a cultural event called the Nandong performance. It involves singing out speech, accompanied by percussive instruments and a bowed viola. Another distinctive Sikule cultural form, which is a matter of local pride, is called debus. It is a martial art form in which practitioners are reputed to be able to make their bodies immune to stabbing by swords or other sharp objects. Simeulue Island has three primary industries: fishing, farming, and tourism. Agriculture is also good for many as a supplement to fishing. Tourism is a relatively new industry in Simeulue and is experiencing rapid growth.

Ministry Obstacles
The Sikule will need to hear the gospel from outsiders, as there are likely no Christian followers in their community.

Scripture Focus
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."  John 15:5

Scripture Prayer
Pray for the Lord is to help today’s people group to understand that apart from Him they can do nothing of spiritual and eternal value.

Prayer Focus
Pray for visitors to take the JESUS Film and gospel recordings to the people of Simeulue Island. Pray for the Sikules to have the spiritual hunger it takes to seek and find the only Savior. Pray that soon Sikule disciples will make more disciples.
