Latvian Jewish in Latvia
LAT-vee-un joo
Jews have lived in Latvia since the 16th century. Before World War I, Jews played a major role in the development of the country's industries, commerce and banking. Discrimination brought economic distress to many Latvian Jews. The majority of Jews in Latvia today live in or near the capital city of Riga.
Ministry Obstacles Tragically, many Latvian citizens began to persecute the Jews immediately after the German invasion of 1940. By the time World War II was over, the Nazis had murdered 90% of Latvia's Jewish population. Today, Latvia's Jews consist mostly of Jews who came to Latvia after WWII from various parts of the Soviet Union. They do not trust Christians.
Outreach Ideas There have been several incidents of anti-Semitism in Latvia. Every year, Latvian Jews choose to leave the country for Israel. Compassionate ministry and humanitarian assistance could be a powerful way for Christians to win their trust and show them the way to the cross of Christ.
Scripture Focus "And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd." Ezekiel 34:23
Scripture Prayer Pray for today’s people group to submit to the one true shepherd, Jesus Christ.
Prayer Focus Ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth loving laborers to the Jews of Latvia. Ask God to anoint the gospel as it goes forth via radio and TV in that nation. Pray that God would give the Messianic Jews of Riga boldness to share the gospel with their people. Pray for a vigorous and growing Latvian Messianic movement.
