The Amung Damal people, also known as Amungme or Uhunduni, live in the rugged central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia. Their homeland includes areas in Paniai, Ilaga, Beoga, and surrounding regencies, stretching across valleys and mountains near the Carstensz range. Historically, the Amung Damal have been semi-nomadic, practicing shifting agriculture and maintaining strong ties to their ancestral lands. Their culture is deeply rooted in the highland environment, and they have preserved traditional customs despite increasing contact with outsiders due to mining and development projects in the region.
Life among the Amung Damal revolves around subsistence farming, hunting, and gathering. They cultivate sweet potatoes, taro, and other root crops, often using terraced gardens on steep slopes. Pigs are highly valued and play an important role in social and ceremonial life. Villages are small and scattered, with homes built from wood and thatch. Travel is difficult, requiring long treks through mountainous terrain. Access to healthcare and education is limited, and many families rely on traditional knowledge for survival. Modern influences, including mining operations, have brought economic opportunities but also social challenges.
Most Amung Damal people identify as Christian, with the majority affiliated with mainline denominations. While Christianity is widespread, many individuals lack a clear understanding of biblical faith, and traditional animistic practices may still influence spiritual life. There is a strong need for teaching that emphasizes the gospel and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Amung Damal face both physical and spiritual challenges. Isolation and rugged terrain limit access to clean water, healthcare, and education. Economic opportunities are scarce outside of mining-related work, leaving many families dependent on subsistence living. Spiritually, while Christianity is present, there is a need for discipleship, leadership training, and resources that encourage genuine faith and counter syncretism.
Pray for mature, Bible-believing leaders to rise up among the Amung Damal people.
Ask God to strengthen existing churches and bring spiritual renewal.

Pray for hearts to be open to the gospel and for a hunger for truth among the Amung Damal.
