Introduction / History Romania has over thirty Deaf Clubs and Associations. Many Deaf are underemployed due to economic problems and can only find menial work. There are at least 13 Deaf schools in Romania and the emphasis is on speech reading rather than sign in the classroom. Once the Deaf person leaves school and get acclimated into the Deaf population the use of sign language is much more acceptable. When the Iron Curtain was lifted, DOOR (Deaf Opportunity Out Reach) was invited by Joni and Friends to travel to Romania in search of disabled people and to share the gospel. In the 1990's many trips were made by DOOR and other mission organizations to help the Deaf in Romania. Instruction was done in Romanian Sign Language and today there are over twenty Deaf churches and interpreted ministries in this country. Some of the established churches even had Deaf elders, teachers and pastors. In the early 2000's CBS (Chronological Bible Storying) was introduced in the Deaf churches and has been very successful in helping to teach Bible truths to the Deaf population.
