Introduction / History

The Deaf of Finland live similarly to any other person within their given culture. Because of their communication limits, they are cut off from meaningful interaction with any who have not learned Finnish Sign Language. There have been Deaf schools in Finland since 1846.


What Are Their Lives Like?

Finns are trying to include the Deaf. The Finnish Museum of the Deaf has a collection for those who research the history and culture of the Deaf in their country.

Many Deaf have menial jobs because of a lack of adequate trade school opportunities and/or a lack of trained interpreters to go to higher education. Few employers are able or willing to go the extra mile to learn Finnish Sign Language so they can communicate. The Finns are trying to correct this situation so higher education can be opened to the Deaf.

They are looked down upon as mentally deficient because of their lack of speech. There is a general feeling of hopelessness and helplessness because of being stuck.
