Introduction / History

The Fongoro people are also called Gelege and Kole. Since the 18th century, they have been pushed into a remote, desolate area by the expansion of Arab and Fur peoples. At this point, the Fongoro speakers are being assimilated with the Fur peoples.

Where Are they Located?

Fongoro speakers live in the hill country that straddles Sudan and Chad. It is a remote part of the world.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Some people who speak this language are hunter-gatherers. Others are fishermen who catch and dry fish for food. Some of them farm sorghum. Their land has poor soil, there is not enough water, and they suffer from the tsetse fly.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religion practiced by the Fongoro people is Islam, a monotheistic religion built around the teachings of the Koran and of the prophet Mohammad. Like most African Muslims, they are also devoted to other spirit beings as well as to the teachings of Islam.

What Are Their Needs?

The Fongoro people need the chance to earn a living. Farming, hunting, and fishing are not enough for them to get enough to eat. They especially need help from outsiders who can help them eradicate the tsetse fly.

Prayer Items

Pray for God to shower his abundant mercy on these suffering people.
Pray for the Fongoro speakers to find a way to thrive economically and spiritually.
Pray for them to have the chance to hear and respond to the gospel.
Pray for a disciple making movement to emerge among Fongoro speakers.
