Introduction / History

The Kutubu Foi people live in the Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea, especially east and south of Lake Kutubu and along the Mubi River valley. Their homeland includes forested ridges, riverbanks, and lakeside settlements that have shaped their movements, relationships, and cultural patterns over many generations. The Foi identify several subgroups associated with these areas, including those living near Lake Kutubu, those upstream along the Mubi River, and those farther downstream near its junction with the Kikori River. Their language belongs to the East Kutubuan family, reflecting deep historical roots in this part of Papua New Guinea.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life among the Kutubu Foi is closely tied to gardening, sago processing, hunting, and fishing. Sweet potatoes, taro, pandanus, and bananas remain important crops grown in shifting garden plots. Pigs are highly valued and play a key role in social relationships and exchange practices.

Communities traditionally organized themselves around longhouses built on high ridges for protection. Men once slept in these longhouses, while women and children lived in surrounding homes. Seasonal rhythms influence where families live at different times of the year. During the rainy season, many families move to temporary forest houses to focus on hunting, while older men may remain in the village. The Foi also recognize seasonal cycles by the appearance of specific plants, which guide certain activities and ceremonies.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the primary religious identity among the Kutubu Foi people today. Churches and Christian teaching play central roles in community life, shaping worship, moral instruction, and local fellowship.

In earlier times, the Foi recognized various spiritual forces connected to the landscape, forests, and their ancestral traditions. These beliefs differed between subgroups and families and are best described cautiously and generally. Christian faith, however, has become the main spiritual framework for most Foi families.

What Are Their Needs?

Due to the remote and forested terrain of the Kutubu region, many communities face limited access to education, healthcare, and transportation. Support for literacy, family well?being, and sustainable agriculture can strengthen daily life. Preserving language and cultural knowledge may also be valuable as communities engage increasingly with modern influences.

Spiritually, continued discipleship, access to Scripture, and strong local leadership remain important. Encouraging believers, supporting pastors and teachers, and strengthening family-based faith practices can contribute to long-term spiritual growth.
