Czechs generally tend to be rather reserved with strangers. Czechs like to sit and drink, deepening relationships. The society is relatively patriarchal. Women will take on the husband's name after marriage and husbands take pride in providing for their families. However, this trend has been recently questioned and is changing.Women are expected to work after marriage, because it is nearly impossible to raise a family on a single income salary. The heritage of communism is still quite prevalent, visible in the way they do not want to recognize religion as an important part of human life.
Even though they claim to be secularists, many Czechs believe in certain occult practices such as tarot reading, astrology, fortune telling and astral projection. Some Czechs also engage in originally pagan holidays. When asked what they believe in, they would say "there is something", which typically refers to spiritual powers or destiny, however they deny the existence of one personal God. Furthermore, there is recently an influence of eastern practices that have gained popularity, namely yoga and eastern meditation. In the Christian community and church life, local evangelical churches are rather scattered. Theirs is a complex history and they do not use the full potential of cooperation amongst them.
