Egypt is the most rapidly growing country in the Arab world. With limited arable land and overtaxed resources, Egyptian society is struggling. Many Egyptians have chosen to migrate to other parts of the world. Egyptians began leaving in the 1970s and 1980s. Since then, many poorer Egyptians have moved to the West (Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand) to find jobs. The UAE is one of their top destinations for temporary work.
Egyptians in UAE are there to build a better future. They often work in construction, in factories, restaurants and shops. A few have become engineers, architects, designers or entered other professions. Egyptians in the UAE are more family-oriented than their hosts. Egyptian families seldom move to the UAE together, so they form surrogate families with other Egyptians. The elder generation likes to spend time together at coffee shops, playing board games and watching televised soccer matches. The population of Egyptians in the UAE has become large enough for them to have their own restaurants, movies and TV shows.
