Introduction / History

Most of the Greek community in Zimbabwe is found in Harare, the capital city, showcasing Greek heritage through its churches, restaurants, small businesses, and social clubs. Many Greeks immigrated to Zimbabwe seeking a better life after World War II and during the Greek Civil War, which lasted from 1946 to 1949.

While most community members found work in the retail and manufacturing sectors in Harare, some also worked in hydroelectric construction and heavy industry, where there was a severe labor shortage in the early post-war period.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Greek population in Zimbabwe is currently declining, mostly due to the deterioration of the country’s domestic and financial conditions. Aside from a number of landowners and businesspeople, most members of the Greek community are engaged in trade and bakery activities. They are organized into communities, and there is a Greek secondary school in operation.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The predominant religion among the Greeks is Christian Orthodoxy. Zimbabwe is home to several Greek Orthodox churches, as well as Greek associations and humanitarian organizations.

What Are Their Needs?

The Greeks need to see beyond rituals and traditions. Jesus should be the center of a vibrant faith.
