Most Indians in Portugal come from the state of Gujarat. They speak Gujarati and only speak Portuguese as a second language.

Some Gujaratis came to Portugal before World War II and some after. Before coming to Portugal they lived mostly in Mozambique. Most migrated from that country to Lisbon the capital of Portugal in the early 1980s as there was a civil war in that country.

Hinduism is their religion though there are some who are Sunni Muslims. There is a Hindu temple in Lisbon. They live in large families with several relatives living in the same home. They work in commerce. There are professionals among them who work in medicine, engineering and other work.
