Introduction / History

The Igede are an indigenous ethnic people of central Nigeria, primarily found in Benue State and dispersed into neighboring states such as Cross River, Osun, and Ogun. They speak the Igede language, part of the Niger-Congo language family, and maintain a strong cultural identity distinct from neighboring groups such as the Idoma and Tiv, though historical records show periods of association under colonial administration. Their oral traditions recall an origin in Sabon Gida Ora (present-day Edo State), with migration through what is now Enugu State into Benue centuries ago, woven into song and storytelling among the people.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The heart of Igede life is agriculture and family. The vast majority of Igede families are engaged in farming, cultivating staple crops such as yams, cassava, maize, groundnuts and bambaranuts, where yam holds symbolic importance as both food and cultural mark of prosperity.

Work on the farms is often a family affair, with men and women both contributing to planting, tending and harvesting crops. In addition to crop farming, many engage in ancillary trades like pottery, weaving, carpentry, and small-scale commerce.

Within the family, social structures remain patrilineal; male children traditionally carry forward the family name and heritage, and land inheritance is customarily through male lines. Extended families frequently live in compounds where daily life revolves around shared meals, collective farming tasks and community rituals.

Celebrations and community rhythms are closely tied to the agricultural calendar. The Igede Agba, or New Yam Festival, is an annual thanksgiving event at the end of the yam harvest. This colorful festival brings families together for feasting, dance, music, masquerades and gratitude for God's provision at the close of the farming season. Yams harvested before the festival are not to be eaten until the ceremony is held, and the event marks not only the harvest but the beginning of the next planting cycle.

Food is a source of identity as well as sustenance. People eat meals centered on their produce — pounded yam (iju) often served with locally prepared soups and stews — and food plays a key role in hospitality, festivals, family gatherings, and traditional rites.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Spiritual life among the Igede is a blend of Christianity and traditional beliefs. A significant majority of Igede identify with Christianity (many in Protestant traditions), reflecting the impact of mission work and church presence in the region.

However, traditional religion and ancestral belief systems remain influential in community identity and rituals among some families. Long before Christian influence, Igede people acknowledged a supreme deity often known in tradition as Ohe ("great spirit"), creator of the world, and other ancestral spirits connected to daily life and harvest cycles.

Traditional customs centered on spiritual order and community wellbeing — including rites connected with harvest festivals, appeasing invisible forces, and practices to protect the community from misfortune — still reflect deep cultural roots. Some Igede today integrate these beliefs with Christian faith, while others practice one tradition exclusively.

What Are Their Needs?

The Igede people face spiritual and physical challenges that deeply affect their families and future. Christian faith is present, yet many believers are still growing in discipleship, mature Christian teaching and full devotion to Jesus Christ. There is a need for stronger church communities that nurture vibrant, Christ-centered living, discipleship and leadership development among the Igede, especially among younger generations who often migrate to cities for education and work.

Economically, many families toil at subsistence farming. Improved access to sustainable agricultural practices, fair markets, and community development initiatives would ease economic pressures that weigh on families, allowing them to focus on education, health, and community service.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Igede church to grow in depth and unity, with believers living out the gospel in ways that transform families and communities.
Pray for those who identify culturally with Christianity but lack a personal relationship with Jesus to encounter God's love and truth in Scripture.
Pray for gospel workers, discipleship leaders and teachers to arise from within the Igede community to strengthen local churches.
Pray asking God to use you to faithfully preach the gospel, teach the Bible, and make disciples of the Igede peoples.
