Introduction / History

The Kalanga are also known as Bakalanga. They are the second largest people group in Botswana, though their numbers are greater in Zimbabwe. A small number also lives further north in Tanzania.

Their ancestors helped build the Mapungubwe Empire, which was the first uniform kingdom in southern Africa. They went on to help build two other kingdoms in the centuries that followed.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kalanga have always taken on the role of rainmakers. They perform a ritual that involves wearing a white shirt and black skirt, the latter represents rain clouds. They go to the Njelele shrine in Zimbabwe to plead for rain.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though they have ancient beliefs regarding rainmaking, the Kalanga also embrace Christianity, even in Botswana where the Kalanga church is weakest.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kalanga people need to put all their faith in God to provide them with rain and abundant crops.

Prayer Points

Pray for abundant rain and a great harvest this year as a testimony of God’s power and love.

Pray for the Kalanga people to recognize Jehovah Jireh as their only provider and forsake all ancient gods.

Pray for Kalanga disciples who will make more disciples, especially in Botswana.
